Baby on Craigslist

Posted: October 1, 2010

COLORADO SPRINGS - On October 1 police received a call regarding a suspicious Craigslist ad. The posting warned that “a child will die if no one comes to get it.” A picture was attached to the post and showed a newborn with an umbilical cord attached. It also said the infant was to be placed into a trash can in front of some apartments.

Initial reports said police thought the posting was a hoax. Authorities now say they are treating the investigation as real until proven otherwise. Colorado Springs Police say they traced the IP address of the listing to residents who had no knowledge of the Craigslist listing advertising a newborn. Police are urging the Colorado Springs couple to contact them.

WESTMINSTER - The body of a “near term fetus or term infant” was found stuffed in a cloth travel bag in a Westminster home on Wednesday, officials said. The homeowner told investigators he smelled a foul odor coming from the basement and located the baby in a bag in the corner. The body was decomposed and mummified, and later determined to be a near term male.

25-year-old Melinda Hudson turned herself in to Westminster Police shortly after the body was found and pleaded guilty to criminally negligent child abuse. Her eight year sentence will include therapy and substance abuse treatment.

DENVER – Fire stations are adding prominent signage touting them as “Safe Havens,” where unwanted newborns can be surrendered, no questions asked. The signs, unveiled at a news conference Tuesday, are being placed eight years after the law was enacted in 2000.

While the Safe Haven law has led to the secure relinquishing of 27 babies in Colorado, it is believed at least that many have died after being abandoned. The hope is that the signs will raise awareness of the Safe Haven law.

GRAND JUNCTION - Police say an Alaska woman stowed her newborn boy in a tote bag and left him to die in a closet at her parent’s Grand Junction house. Police arrested 22-year-old Morgan Hite in Wasilla, Alaska on investigation of first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.

A forensic pathologist says the child was found dead more than two months after his birth and that he had been born alive. Hite told her Grand Junction-based parents during a February visit that she gave birth to a boy a week earlier in Alaska but gave him up for adoption. But police say Hite gave birth to the boy in a neighbor’s bath tub on Feb. 25 during her visit and took him to her parent’s house in a plastic garbage bag. The baby was found dead April 29.

Hite later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
